The core of their sound is the saz, a Turkish bouzouki-like stringed instrument with a bright, high-pitched sound.

Play The Harry Partch Instrumentarium

A 45 minute look at instruments designed and built by "Hobo Composer" Harry Partch. An early "Outsider Musician", Mr. Partch designed new scales for music and taught musicians how to play his compositions on these instruments. The instruments, now housed at the University Of Washington in Seattle, are examined and demonstrated by curator Charles Corey. You can hear echoes of Partch's influence in many avant-garde bands of today, particularly in the early recordings of the Residents ("Fingerprince"-1977).

Post-Gong Prog-Rock Wizard Steve Hillage and his band offer up a live psychedelic set at the University of Kent  nearly 40 years ago. Nearly the last flowering of the Hippie Spirit for a while as the newer Punk and Rap influences were starting to take hold and overnight Prog found itself escorted out the door. The spirit was kept alive below the surface and later resurfaced with groups like Ozric Tentacles.

Originally slated to be a one-time replacement for Saturday Night, this 1979 parody of MONDO CANE (and the other films of the "Mondo" fad) was directed by and starred Michael O'Donohue and many of the first Saturday Night Live cast. Various cameos feature everyone from the late Carrie Fisher to the late Margo Kidder. NBC refused to show it due to "racy content" and it was later transferred to 35mm film and released to theater audiences. Tame by today's standards, it was considered "edgy" at the time!

You'll crack up at this wacky sequel to the 1958 Steve McQueen BLOB movie! Also known as SON OF BLOB, it was directed by Larry Hagman (Dallas' J. R. Ewing!) and stars Robert Walker (of Ensign Palmer, son of Robert Walker of Strangers On A Train) and Tuesday Weld-wannabe, Carol Linley in a goofy updated remake with much humor, fun-loving hippies and many cameos!  Cindy Williams (before Laverne and Shirley) plays a pot-smoker, Godfrey Cambridge as a construction worker who brings the Blob back from the arctic, Shelly Berman as a barber, and many more. Larry Hagman and Burgess Meredith make an appearance as a couple of homeless gentlemen. It should be better remembered than it is.
